Understanding the relationship between food and our bodies

We've all heard the phrase "you are what you eat", but there's more truth to that than most people realize. The food we eat provides all the building blocks we need to build, repair, and maintain our bodies. Ensuring we eat a wide variety of all of the essential components allows our body to stay healthy and strong. Unlike most of human history, food is now abundant and relatively affordable, making it easy for us to attain more than enough calories. What is difficult now is making sure the calories we take in are nutritionally sound.
Opinions abound on what is the proper way to eat, what items are 'healthy', how much to eat and when, and that can leave many people confused and unsure of what a healthy relationship with food looks and feels like.
We don't focus on traditional 'dieting' or weight loss, instead we will help you relearn to listen to your body and its cues and build a healthier relationship with the food you eat.
Here's what you can expect in a counseling session:
A registered dietitian will meet with you via secure, HIPAA compliant video conference to discuss your medical history, current health concerns, your current diet and any diet goals. The dietitian will create a customized approach to your specific goals and can also provide Medical Nutrition Therapy for certain medical conditions, such as:
- Diabetes
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- Malnutrition
- Certain GI disorders (GERD, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, etc.)
We utilize an Intuitive Eating approach to help you learn to:
- Listen to your body's hunger cues,
- Understand why you have cravings,
- Do away with 'guilt' surrounding food
- Build a healthy relationship between the food you eat and the way you feel.
Weight loss is not the focus of this service, but some clients may experience weight loss as a result of having a greater understanding of their relationship to food and their bodies.
Most clients meet with us anywhere from once a month up to once a week, and we will continue to discuss and customize our plan based on what works for you.
